Mission Trip Reflection
CHARIS-Barré Mission Friendship | Kontum, Vietnam | 25 July – 1 August 2015
By Simon Soh
Firstly, I would like to thank God for making this trip possible for me. The response for the participation of the trip was overwhelming despite the fact that there were only 8 of us.
My prayer was finally answered and I’m really glad to have met and befriended many wonderful people throughout my personal journey. There are of course, wins and challenges during the trip, which is perfectly normal. At the end of the day, I suppose it really depends on how you manage and overcome it.
Naturally, I am a calm and patient person. For this reason, I see this as an asset in adapting to my team mates and fellow missioners. I’ve also learned a lot from my fellow missioners about teamwork, not taking life too seriously, openness and socializing. This are values that money can’t buy and I’m truly honored to have been able to express myself freely (verbally) without having to put on a mask. It is through this openness and sincerity that there is open communication and we are able to get to know each other better.
God has always been the centre of my life and is my driving force to be of service to mankind especially to those are deprived of education and daily basic needs. Honestly, I was deeply moved by the village visits and the students. I felt a deep sense of pain from poverty, yet happiness and contentment among the students and the villages. It is as if time stood still and they were not bothered by the world around them. It’s day to day living and contentment. That’s what life is all about. Happiness comes from within you.
From my observation and involvement, all the students are extremely receptive to learning. I am aware that they are shy during their initial contact as they don’t really know us. That’s understandable. As days go by, they became open and will try to communicate with us. I write about my personal connection to the
two students I taught personally during my time spent here in Kontum.
Chil – She loves to smile and is easily humoured. Patient in character, eager to learn and will ask if unsure. Interested to learn more about the English language so that she’ll be able to understand and communicate with English speaking foreigners/tourist. Also interested in the culture and habits of other nationalities.
Hue – Focus and strong willed. Is not shy and will not hesitate to try and express herself verbally and in the written English language. Always willing to learn and uses her thinking skills well to try and understand different words and sentences. Overall, intelligent and has initiative.
I was fortunate in a sense that I felt that I was able to connect with them emotionally and culturally without which I believe my teaching would not have been a success.
Thankful for the experience. God bless.
