On September 12, at 3 pm Philippine Standard Time, Typhoon Mangkhut (local name: Ompong) entered the Philippines as a Category 5 super typhoon. Mangkhut was the strongest typhoon to make landfall in the Philippines since Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013.
Key data on affected populations:
- An estimated 270,388 persons are affected, with at least 150,000 being displaced.
- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has estimated the death toll to be at least 100, with more fatalities feared.
- A total of 145 houses have been totally or partially damaged.
