8 bomb blasts rocked Sri Lanka to its core on Sunday (April 21), a day on which the Catholic and Christian population of the country was celebrating Easter Sunday. The bombs started exploding early hours in the morning from 8.45 am onwards mainly targeting Catholic Churches in Colombo and the suburb followed by a bomb blast at the Zion Church in Batticaloa in the Eastern Province. The last bomb exploded around 3.00 p.m. when police were tracking a place where suspects believed to be housed in Dematagoda towards the North of Colombo. The first coordinated attacks took place around 8.45 am targeting the worshippers at St. Anthony’s Shrine, Kochchikade, Colombo.

As of 24 April 2019, the death toll has increased to 359 persons. Over 500 are injured and 375 are receiving treatment in hospitals.
