A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck in the region of Pidie Jaya located in the province of Aceh. The earthquake has claimed the lives of at least 101 people as of 11 December. From 10 December - 11 December, there were 7 aftershocks reported. More than 65,000 people have been reported to be displaced as most buildings have been reduced to rubble and electricity lines have been cut off. Currently the displaced have chosen to put up in shelters that have been set up close to their homes to gain access to electricity and also for a temporary respite from the aftershocks.
Currently, the provincial government in Aceh has considered the disaster as a provincial one and did not request international support for this emergency.
Our partner, KARINA - Caritas Indonesia and Caritas PSE Archdiocese of Medan (CPSE Medan) have deployed 4 emergency staff to conduct a joint needs assessment with other humanitarian agencies and organisations on the ground. They are currently doing an analysis of their findings and will provide further recommendations.
