On 21st November 2022, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit the region of West Java. Though the earthquake was shallow, the damage and devastation caused were staggering – more so than the earthquakes they have experienced in the past 2 decades. According to the report by The National Agency for Disaster Countermeasures of Indonesia, the impact of the earthquake has cost the lives of 329 individuals and displaced over 100,000 people.
After an initial assessment done by Caritas Indonesia in 4 affected village areas in two sub-districts, Cianjur Regency, the affected communities are living in makeshift shelters that may be haphazardly put together. Access to clean water remains a concern as roads have been damaged, causing difficulties in the distribution of clean water.
Support and aid are needed in areas of food provision, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene.
