On 26 May 2024, Cyclone Remal made landfall roughly 80 kilometres (50 miles) southeast of Bangladesh packing gusts of up to 135 kilometres per hour (84 miles per hour) and moved northwards across Bangladesh, devastating the country’s coastal districts. Heavy rainfall followed and a 5-7 ft tidal surge that battered 16 coastal districts, with eight of them severely affected, being the most devastating cyclone to strike Bangladesh in over a decade.
CHARIS supported Caritas Bangladesh with S$30,000, assisting over 24,000 individuals, including children. The aid comprised the support of shelter, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), food security, and livelihood options, to restore the livelihoods of those affected as soon as possible.
