WHEN THERE IS LOVE, THERE IS NO LABOUR

WHEN THERE IS LOVE, THERE IS NO LABOUR

In March 2024, I volunteered with Cahaya Masa Depan – a member organisation of CHARIS – on a mission trip to Batam, Indonesia. We served at St. Theresa orphanage in Rempang and the Daily Bread soup kitchen in Panbil. Throughout the trip, I learned to serve others with humility and care.

Additionally, I engaged in meaningful discussions and reflection sessions with other volunteers about our spiritual journeys. At St. Theresa in Rempang, I discovered that many children, ranging in age from 2 to 4 years old, were separated from their parents who worked in another city. These children are cared for by Catholic nuns. We spent time visiting and playing with them, and it brought me joy to see how delighted they were by our presence. A quote from one of the nuns that stayed with me is, “If there is love, there is no labour.” This profound statement highlights how love transforms volunteering into a fulfilling and joyful activity rather than an obligation. This love emanates from the love of God.

At Daily Bread (Soup Kitchen Panbil), we prepared meals for the needy and marginalised, further deepening my understanding of service and compassion. This visit allowed me to encounter many underprivileged individuals who need assistance to carry out their daily activities. Sharing food and bringing smiles and joy to them was incredibly fulfilling. By serving through our small actions, we bring a big impact on their lives, bringing the Gospel to life and embodying its teachings through our actions.

As Psalms 90:17 says, “Lord our God, may your blessings be with us. Give us success in all we do!” This verse resonates deeply with my experience, reminding me that our efforts in serving others are blessed and guided by God's love.
